Why Acupuncture Works for Almost Everything (Literally)

Holly Pelletier, L.Ac.
Holly is a licensed acupuncturist, herbalist, and doctoral student in integrative medicine based in Fort Collins, Colorado. With 10+ years in private practice and 15+ years in her TCM era, she has sat across from countless people who have been treated like a number — told their labs are "normal" and their symptoms are "just stress."
She has proudly built her practice around finding the root cause and helping people reconnect with their body's innate capacity to heal. Practicing from an East Meets West approach, Holly bridges ancient clinical wisdom with modern diagnostic precision — because you deserve both working together in service of you.
One of the most common questions I get after telling someone I'm an acupuncturist is some version of: "Can it help with ______?" The blank gets filled in with everything from migraines to infertility to anxiety to chronic fatigue. And my answer is almost always some version of yes — not because acupuncture is magic, but because it works in a specific way that clearly sets it apart from other healing modalities.
Intrigued? Let me explain.
Intrigued? Let me explain.
The fix-it mentality.
Let's start from the beginning and talk about some of the nuanced ways acupuncture and Chinese medicine think differently about health, and the world. As a society, we've inherited a healthcare model built almost entirely around reaction. Something breaks, we fix it. Something hurts, we manage it. We don't often think about creating and maintaining a healthy body before the malfunctions begin — and by the time most people walk into my treatment room, they've been managing symptoms for months, sometimes years, without anyone asking why those symptoms started in the first place. That's where Chinese medicine got something right thousands of years ago.
Here's a scenario most people recognize. You tweak your knee. You start walking differently to protect it — shifting weight to the other hip, favoring one side without even realizing it. A few weeks later your lower back hurts. A month after that your shoulder is tight. You've been compensating so long that a new pain has become the loudest thing in the room, and the original injury has almost been forgotten. This is the domino effect of imbalance — and it doesn't only happen in the musculoskeletal system. Every system in the body is interconnected. Every organ, every cell, every feedback loop. When one thing is out of balance, the body compensates — and compensation, over time, creates new imbalance somewhere else.
In Chinese medicine we say the sick robs from the healthy. The body is constantly borrowing from reserves to keep functioning, until eventually those reserves run dry and symptoms appear somewhere we didn't expect. Those symptoms often start quietly. A little more fatigue than usual. Sleep that's not as deep. Digestion that's slightly off. A mood that's harder to regulate. Most people chalk these up to stress or aging and keep moving. But these subtle shifts are the body's early warning system — and they are absolutely worth paying attention to.

Your nervous system called. Acupuncture answered.
When we look at acupuncture through a modern clinical lens, we see a medicine that works directly with the nervous system, the endocrine system, and the body's own regulatory feedback loops. Inserting a needle into an acupuncture point stimulates the sensory receptors in that tissue, which activates the nerve, which sends signals all the way up to the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis — the command center for hormones, stress response, immune function, and more.
This is why acupuncture can have such broad effects. It's not treating a symptom in isolation. It's communicating with the system that governs almost everything. Simply put: acupuncture doesn't fix you. It reminds your body how to fix itself.
In my practice, I layer this with an East Meets West approach — meaning we're not choosing between the wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the precision of modern functional medicine. We're using both. Pattern recognition from thousands of years of clinical observation, paired with lab work, optimal health markers, and root-cause investigation. It's a more complete picture than either system offers alone.

Stop waiting for the breakdown.
Acupuncture is most powerful when imbalances are fresh — which is why I love treating younger patients, and why I wish more people came in before things became chronic. The longer an imbalance goes unaddressed, the deeper it roots itself into the system, and the longer it takes to unwind with any form of medicine.
That said, acupuncture has a meaningful role in chronic illness too. It may not reverse a decades-long systemic condition overnight, but what I can say with confidence is this: acupuncture will help something. Even in the most complex cases, quality of life improves. Pain decreases. Sleep gets better. The nervous system gets a moment to exhale. And sometimes, that's everything.

The main complaint doesn't always shift first.
Because acupuncture works with so many people presenting so differently, it's hard to promise specific outcomes before we've had a chance to work together. But these are the shifts I see show up again and again, regardless of what someone originally came in for:
- More stable, regulated mood
- Improved stress response and resilience
- Better, deeper sleep
- More consistent energy throughout the day — no more afternoon crashes
- Decreased pain and inflammation
- Appetite that feels more natural and intuitive
- An overall sense of feeling more like themselves
When these positive changes start to show up quietly and you subtly begin to feel better, you know your body is responding to the treatment. This means that those mechanisms we talked about above — the nervous system response, the hormonal feedback loops, the regulatory systems — are settling and calming. These are clues we are moving in the right direction.

The bottom line.
Acupuncture doesn't work by targeting a disease. It works by restoring the conditions the body needs to heal itself. And when you restore those conditions — when the nervous system is regulated, the feedback loops are communicating, and the body isn't in a constant state of compensation — a lot of things get better at once.
So yes. Whatever you were about to put in that blank? There's a good chance acupuncture can help. The best way to find out is to start.

My practice is a little different by design — every session begins with a real conversation, because I genuinely want to know what's going on beneath the surface. I practice through an East Meets West lens, which means you get the benefit of thousands of years of clinical wisdom alongside modern diagnostics, lab interpretation, and root-cause investigation. No rushing, no cookie-cutter protocols, no being treated like a number. Just thoughtful, personalized care aimed at helping your body do what it was always designed to do.
If you're ready to stop managing symptoms and start getting answers, I'd love to be part of that journey.
Here's to your health,
Holly
